The main exponents of VA therapy have been able to identify beneficial effects in five main clinical areas (Grocke, Wigram, 2007):
1.-Pain treatment:
Vibroacoustic therapy has been used effectively in patients with colic pains, bowel problems, fibromyalgia, migraine and headache, lower back pain, menstrual pain, dysmenorrhea, premenstrual pain, Bechterew’s disease, neck and shoulder pains, polyarthritis and rheumatism.
2.-Muscular conditions:
Several clinical studies have been published on the use of vibroacoustic therapy in adult patients with cerebral palsy, high muscle tone and spasticity, multiple sclerosis, Rett syndrome, spasticity and muscle overuse syndrome.
3.-Pulmonary disorders:
Some effect has been observed on certain pulmonary disorders, including: asthma, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary emphysema and metachromatic leukodystrophy.
4.-General physical ailments:
Vibroacoustic therapy has been used to treat patients with decubitus ulcers, reduced blood circulation, post-operative convalescence and stress. This treatment has been found to be effective in reducing blood pressure and heart rate, and improving blood circulation (Skille, Wigram, 1995).
5.-Psychological disorders:
Vibroacoustic therapy has been used in the treatment of insomnia (Wigram, 1996, 2002, 2007). This research reports have shown that clients fall asleep faster and for a longer period than usual. Patients suffering from stress and depression, self-destructive and hostile behaviour and autism have also been treated.
